In 1819 Czech Physiologist Jan Evangelista Purkyne noticed that in daylight red flowers tend to stand out from their green leaves. He then noticed that the green leaves stood out more in low light situations. Purkyne’s simple observation of flowers led to an important discovery about human vision.
